JioGlass is introduced by Reliance during the India Mobile Congress in 2023

At the India Mobile Congress 2023, Reliance Jio unveiled JioGlass, a highly anticipated Mixed Reality (MR) smart glass device that supports augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) content.

Developed by Indian deep tech startup Tesseract (acquired by Reliance Industries in 2019), JioGlass is a smart wearable with a streamlined metallic frame and two lenses. It features dual full-HD displays with a 40-degree field-of-view (FOV), transforming users’ phone screens into an expansive 100-inch virtual display for immersive viewing of TV shows, movies, web series, live sports, and more.

Each eye display has FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution and is certified by TÜV Rheinland for low blue light emissions, reducing eye strain during long periods of use. Moreover, JioGlass includes a removable USB-C 1.5-meter cable that can connect to smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles, and other devices with Type-C display output for viewing content on the virtual screen while also powering the glasses.

Smartphones connected to JioGlass can act as virtual controllers. The AR/VR glasses come with built-in dual stereo speakers for a rich spatial audio experience and an integrated microphone for voice calls. Weighing 69 grams (excluding cable and visor), JioGlass measures 174 x 155 x 38mm.

This lightweight gadget features a proximity sensor, a 9-axis IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor, an unspecified processor, a 5-second boot-up time, and a 1-second resume time. The glasses are powered by a 4,000mAh battery with up to 4 hours of continuous run time in 3D mode and are fitted with a trackpad for controlling volume and brightness.

Magnetic prescription lenses can be attached to Reliance’s AR glasses as per the Tesseract website, and an optician must fit these lenses. Included inserts help secure the glasses in place.

Reliance Jio aims to offer an engaging “gaming and learning experience” with numerous educational apps available through its JioImmerse XR app store. These apps aim to help students learn subjects like science in 3D mode.

Pricing and availability details for the JioGlasses are yet to be revealed, but they are listed as ‘coming soon’ on the company’s website and could be released in the next few months.
